BISQUE & TEAM

Bisque Studios exists to support ceramic artists in many areas. We offer pottery classes for beginner and intermediate students. Working on the wheel as well as hand building, our workshops welcome the curious mind and the ceramic obsessed to learn, create and expand their knowledge. Alongside our classroom is a growing community & studio access program, supporting those seeking on-going access to equipment and a place to call home.

Run by a vibrant team of creative ceramic artists and potters, our studio offers a diverse calendar of workshops and events. Each of our teachers in the classroom has a unique background in pottery and ceramic exploration, sharing their individual passions with our studio and its patrons. Read about individual teachers & artists below, or watch our online chat with some of our teachers “ceramics In Conversation”.

We’re proud to build community through ceramics and grateful to each of our team members who contribute to what make Bisque such a welcoming and unique studio.

Kate Brouwer

Studio Owner & Maker, Host of Specialist Wheel Classes.

Kate is passionate about mastering challenging forms and exploring the boundlessness of clay. As well as a firm believer in strong community and authentic relationships. These interests brought Kate to create Bisque Studios. An accessible space where the local community can connect with artists and makers and delve into the wide world of clay.

Through Bisque Studios, Kate hopes people make authentic connections with others as well as connecting to their own creativity. After recently having a baby, Kate has stepped out of a permanent role in the classroom, but can be found teaching specialised intermediate wheel throwing classes on the weekends, throughout the year. Check out our workshop page & see what’s coming up.

Cassie Lynch

Teacher & Maker

Cass Lynch is a multidisciplinary artist. She throws, sews, and paints out of her home studio in Thornbury (Wurundjeri Land). She is originally from Seattle (Duwamish land) and discovered her immediate connection to pottery when a friend's Grandfather first taught her in his studio in Gippsland (Gunaikurnai Land). Her work is often minimal in nature, with a focus on distinct forms and textures, while showcasing the natural colouring of the medium. She finds the methodical and tactical nature of pottery to be meditative, and feels reverence for the deep history that this art form has.

Cassie brings her vibrant can-do attitude to our Bisque studio, making sure all the studio tasks are handled with care. Cassie brings her vibrant nature to the studio and our classroom, heading up our classroom on a regular basis.

Rí Mowlds

Teacher, Maker & Workshop Host

Rí is an Irish ceramicist whose practice is guided by her philosophy to make mindfully and exploit clay to influence how people feel and respond to ceramic objects.

After years of balancing her love of ceramics with her corporate job, Rí realised that her true life path was to be immersed in pottery full time. Having spent a year apprenticing under a renowned Irish potter, Rí travelled to Melbourne to continue her ceramics journey in the city in which she felt the art was most vibrant.

Rí feels passionately about connection – to both the people and the world around us. This, and her deep interest in mindfulness and presence, heavily influences her ceramic work.

Rí’s warmth, and considered approach to teaching, creates a welcoming atmosphere and leaves students feeling nourished by the therapeutic elements of pottery on which Rí leans.

Ufuk Taner

Studio Assistant, Maker & Workshop Host

Ufuk Taner (you can call him Taner) is a Naarm-based ceramicist who creatively and deftly explores both hand-building and wheel throwing in his emerging practice. Taner was a young lawyer and LGBTQ+ rights activist in Istanbul, Türkiye, before finding a new home on Wurundjeri land. His ceramics journey began here at Bisque, where he first engaged in workshops to connect with his imagination and artistry, as well as to find likeminded souls in the community.

Taner held his first ceramics exhibition at Apax Creative Studios in Preston in November 2022, showing his first collection of functional and sculptural vessels, with a focus on playful forms and textures. Taner is also a Bisque studio hand, and you can often find him firing pieces, pugging (reclaiming) studio clay, and even navigating impossible instructions to build new shelving units for his fellow ceramicists to use.

Adele Macer

Maker & Workshop Host

Adele Macer is a self taught, Melbourne ceramicist making functional tableware, pots, vases and planters for everyday use. Her handmade, stoneware ceramics employ various methods of production and process, specialising in wheel throwing, slip casting and hand building (and sometimes use all three in the one piece). Adele's interest in materials and processes keeps her learning new techniques all of the time and one of her favourite things to do is share her wealth of knowledge.

Adele brings her smile and cheerful attitude to every class that she hosts. Sharing openly her unique knowledge and attention to detail. Adele can be found teaching our relaxed Tuesday morning wheel sessions, as well as hosting private and specialised workshops at the weekend.

Now, he dedicates himself to the craft, spending significant time researching and developing new glazes, particularly focusing on iron based glazes in both oxidation and reduction atmosphere. Mason brings this dedication and knowledge to our community, teaching intermediate wheel throwing classes on Saturdays and leading speciality workshops.

Kayleigh Heydon

Teacher, Artist & Studio Tech

Kayleigh Heydon is a Naarm based artist, originally with a focus on large expressive abstract paintings. Her curiosity for surface and texture pushed her into the world of ceramics about 5 years ago, since then she has explored how slip, oxides and form can be used to create different surfaces for painting within her practice.

Her ‘give it a go’ energy in the classroom fosters a space where you’re encouraged to push yourself and expand your skill set with well explicated guidance. She loves passing on valuable skills for throwing and for best practice in the studio.

Robyn Daly

Artist & Workshop Host

Robyn Daly is a ceramic artist living in Melbourne. Originally a photographer, Robyn has been drawn to a more physical art expression in the last couple of years. Dedicating her time to building intuitive hand-made ceramics, she is particularly inspired by the traditional Japanese art form of Nerikomi and marbling techniques.

Studio Ennui was established to bridge a gap between conceptual design, offline tactility and a desire to create texture.

Inspired by ancient architecture and natural phenomena, Ennui’s ceramic objects are both sculptural and functional pieces intended for personal spaces, intimate moments, and private rituals. Each piece is one of a kind and hand made in her home studio.

Robyn teaches intro workshops on Nerikomi at Bisque studios.
