Exploring Plates and Platters with Kate Brouwer

  • Bisque Studios 2/167 Beavers Road Northcote, VIC, 3070 Australia (map)

Spend time in the classroom with ceramic artist and production potter Kate Brouwer of Asobimasu Clay in this two-part intensive workshop.

This advanced throwing class will cover a range of topics, centred around the exploration of large flat plates and platters. The art of throwing a good plate is quite a different process to throwing all other forms on the wheel. In this workshop we discuss the art of compression on wide surfaces, how to avoid cracking & how to manipulate clay into the perfect plate.

You’ll explore a range of throwing styles to achieve similar results, finding new ways that work for your hands and practice. Kate will deep dive into refining a set of dinner plates, followed by throwing larger & creating statement serving platters.

With Kate’s many years of experience throwing large forms, you will delve into the balance of working with larger portions of clay, pushing your boundaries to create larger platters, with an aim of working with 1.5-2.5kg of clay.

This workshop will be insightful, challenging and full of inspiring ways you can grow your throwing practice.

You’ll complete this workshop with 4 x plates & 1 x large serving ware.

Your work will be bisque fired and ready to take home 1-2 weeks later, to be glazed and fired in your home studio, or you can book into a glazing session for an additional $65 to utilise our studio glazes and have your work fired here with us. Contact the studio manager directly to arrange this.

Suitable for intermediate - advanced students who already have some understanding of working on the wheel. Each activity can be scaled in size & clay weight to suit your throwing capabilities
