I recently travelled to Paris, exploring galleries, street dining, patisseries, and of course, pottery.
I found myself most delighted that my trip dates aligned with the St. Sulpice Ceramique Market, held annually in Paris. Showcasing over 100 contemporary ceramic artists from around Europe.
Gathered under the backdrop of the gorgeous St Sulpice church, an array of perfectly curated ceramic works across a range of practices, with each artist representing themselves and available for a chat. I had a wonderful conversation with a young maker Adélaïde, whose work envelopes beautifully illustrated stories wrapped around large hand-crafted vases. They spoke of being inspired by historical lore and personal experiences as well as having studied at various ceramic residencies around Asia.
The ceramic community is so vast and refreshing; each maker uniquely connected by their love of the material and adoration for individuality through our craft. I was pleasantly grounded to find that the ceramic community in Paris is just as welcoming as our wonderful community here in Melbourne, Australia. Making new friends, meeting established artists I’ve adored and discovering new names to follow. Here’s my list of highlights and a few photographs of the works that captured my interest.
