If you’re just starting out on your pottery journey, you might find the array of pottery terms a bit overwhelming. I remember feeling like everyone in the pottery world spoke a secret language that I had never heard of. Although this language is very helpful to those familiar with it, it can create barriers for newcomers who are eager to explore this beautiful craft. 

The last thing we want is for pottery to feel like an exclusive club. We want everyone, regardless of their skill level, to feel welcomed and empowered to dive into creating with clarity. So, let’s break down some of these terms.

Pottery is a beautiful avenue to bringing more presence and mindfulness into our lives, allowing us to unwind and find peace in the creative process. As I’m sure my students would tell you, I could go on for hours about the therapeutic benefits of this nourishing craft. For today though, let’s just dip our toes into the therapeutic realm of pottery, where the gentle act of shaping clay offers a soothing retreat from the busyness of daily life.

Taking care of the earth, from which our clay comes, is deeply important to us. This is reflected through our entire operation at Bisque Studios as the sustainability of our pottery practice is top priority. Recycling clay is a huge part of this and (we think) a really interesting process!

In partnership with Craft Victoria’s Craft Contemporary Festival, Three Day Clay will showcase the best of Melbourne’s ceramic scene, hosted in the glorious backdrop of the Brunswick Town Hall. Over the weekend of October 28-29, their new fair makes its mark on Melbourne’s  calendar as an exciting annual art event under the new name of  ‘Melbourne Ceramic Fair’.
